WorldWork is a company set up by experienced international managers and academic experts in cross cultural communications. It was established in May 2002 to bring together the particular areas of specialisation represented by TCO -an organisation concerned
with international diversity management and Castleton Partners Limited , an HR consultancy with extensive experience of using a range of different approaches, including psychometrics, to the assessment and development of leaders.
Listening to the experiences of our clients, it became clear that more and more people were being asked to work internationally. This might be in the form of an assignment in another country, leading a multi-national team, reporting to a manager from another country, dealing with
suppliers or clients from abroad, or working as part of a virtual team. Whatever the context, many people find such experiences challenging and fun, but there is plenty of evidence that failure rates are high and that frustrations and problems arise due to misunderstandings and miscommunications.
It is not easy to work across multiple cultural boundaries and time zones.
A number of organisations provide useful training in how to do business in specific countries by familiarising people with the customs and ways of those cultures. Others provide help in understanding how cultures differ from each other in important respects. But we have developed
a different approach, based around 10 key international competencies, that helps people to identify strategies for becoming effective as quickly as possible in any unfamiliar cultural environment. The primary focus is on identifying practical things that individuals, teams
and organisations can do, to make them more effective at meeting their international business objectives.
